Abstract

This study aims to analyze ecological metaphors, natural imagery, and environmental ideology contained in Bahagia's short story “Musahnya Hutan Larangan” using a stylistic approach. The short story depicts an ecological conflict between indigenous communities and the systematic exploitation of a protected forest. The method employed is descriptive-qualitative with stylistic analysis techniques encompassing identification, classification, and interpretation of figurative language. Research data consist of direct quotations from the short story text containing elements of ecological metaphor, natural imagery, and environmental ideology discourse. The results reveal three main findings: (1) six dominant ecological metaphors structure the narrative, including metaphors of the forest as life support, water as threat, and nature as a moral subject; (2) natural imagery employed includes visual, auditory, and kinesthetic imagery that constructs an ecocritical atmosphere in the story; and (3) the environmental ideology present in the short story is ecocentric in character with local nuances grounded in customary wisdom and Islamic values. This short story represents an ecocrisis discourse highly relevant to the contemporary condition of Indonesian tropical forests.
